Stolberg-Harz, Germany
Stolberg is one of those small, old German cities you think of when you think of Germany. It is one of the coolest cities I visited in Germany. It is situated in the Harz 'Mountains' (Germans call them mountains, I call them hills). Stolberg was first mentioned in written history in 794. There were iron, silver, and gold mines close by. Before 1300, the city was officially organized. Since that time, Stolberg has remained basically unchanged. Stolberg is known for it famous citizen Thomas Münzer (1489/90 - 1525), who is known for his fight for freedom of a people that was oppressed. It is also known that reformer Martin Luther visited the city and preached at its church often. Stolberg is a very cool German city. My pictures of Stolberg can be found in the picture gallery. |
